Santan stretched her front legs and yawned. She sharpened her claws against a tall pine. Flicking her tail she walked to the stream that lay next to the camp. She drank deeply and heard the early morning sounds: the birds chirping and insects buzzing. She looked further down stream and gasped. Blood polluted the water like a thick layer of oil.

Ishran heard the startled scream. "What?" she called, hurrying out of her den. She looked out across Hiera Island and spotted the cause of alarm. "Oh, no!" She cried, before sprinting back into her den and picking up a bundle of fragrant leaves. "I'd better go see whats going on," she muttered to herself, before spreading her wings and gliding down to the bloody water.

Santan bounded along the bank following the water ignoring Ishran completely. She stopped when she saw a fellow Hiera lying on the grass moaning. She had burns all up and down her front left leg and was tearing at them, trying to pull them of. Santan rushed to restrain her but the Hiera wouldn't let the ancient touch her.

Ishrak gasped with shock. Nasuea roiled through her body as she caught the pungent stench of burnt flesh. Clear liquids oozed out of the gaping wounds. Ishran rolled up a few tiny black seeds in a birch leaf. "Here; this will ease your pain," she whispered. She opened the hiera's mouth, and although it struggled, Ishran managed to get it to swallow the seeds. After a moment, the hiera visibly relaxed and stopped pulling at its wounds. Ishran quickly mashed up some leaves and berries and chewed them until they made a smooth poultice. Ignoring flinches, she rubbed the mixture into the injured hiera's wounds. "I don't know if they'll recover." She whispered softly to Santan, "I can't do much more except sooth the pain."

Santan nodded grimly. What could have happened to her? she wondered. "Ishrak, what do you think caused this wound? I have a fair Idea myself."

Ishrak shrugged her slim shoulders. "I have no idea," she said, clearly worried, "what could have done something like th- Of course. Only one creature can create fire. The dragons." She finished grimly.

Santan nodded grimly. "Correct. They have attacked our kind so we must repay the favour. Alert the others while I try to talk to our friend here."

Ishrak hesitated. Technically, she was of higher rank than the elder, but she couldn't deny that Santan had been a great warrior in her day, and had much more experience than the healer. She leapt into the air and headed back to the camp. She alighted on the Meeting rock, and cried out to all the hiera. "Dragons have attacked!" A murmur rippled through the crowd. "All who wish to avenge our dying sister come with me! This will be war!"

Santan wearily landed on the sandy beach of Dragon cove. What had caused the Dragons to attack our sister? She sighed and flexed her old claws.
